I couldn’t agree with your comments more. When I read your post it put a big smile on my face…and I haven’t smiled for the last 48 hours. I got up this morning to get ready for one of these ridiculously expensive weddings. Not only are these types of weddings expensive but they really take a toll on friends and family. I think they deserve to have that kind of debt for the pain and suffering they put everyone through. It takes the term “BRIDEZILLA” to a whole new level. My brother-in-law and his future wife just had to get married on New Year’s Eve too. (I can tell you now that it wasn’t his idea). The wedding is at 3:00, the reception/dinner is at 7:00 and the after party starts at 9:00. So naturally we are expected to be at the church at 11:00 this am to start. My mother-in-law and I and a couple of her friends and family spent all day yesterday setting up the rehearsal dinner for them…it only took 7 or 8 hours. The rehearsal itself had to be perfect too. It was so idiotic. They must have reworked the ceremony 10 times. Everyone was starving by 7:00 when everyone finally got a chance to eat something. Now we get to spend the entire day worshiping them as well. My poor seven-year-old step-son gets to spend the next 12 hours or so standing around with nothing to do. I won’t
blame him at all if he gets frustrated and throws a tantrum. Hell, I think we all should be allowed one. Too bad there isn’t any alcohol involved until the after party…maybe I’ll put a flask in my purse.

While weddings aren’t the most practical way to spend money, I think that if you can afford them they’re not a terrible thing to have. you don’t have to go overboard, but i don’t see what’s wrong having a reception in a hotel with a cake, DJ, flowers, photographer, etc. People are spending money on things they dont’ need all the time - if a nice wedding makes you happy why not have it? I agree that going into a huge debt to have such a wedding isn’t the smartest, but if you keep within your means I say go for it. Not all weddings are stupid.

HA!! My daughter got married in Las Vegas last week, and I loved it!! I got to sit at my desk at work and watch the live web cam of the wedding, and it didn’t cost me a dime. They paid for the whole trip and are having the time of their lives, and when they come back, I’m going to give them a chunk of money to start their married lives off for being so sensible.

If I get married, it will be in Vegas. I have had to sit through, be in the bridal party for, and sing at too many weddings EXACTLY like the one VA described. I want the tackiest, most white trash wedding imaginable, baby!

I got married today, actually. We saved a bit here and there for a few months to get a nice photographer, but the flowers, location, and food were all good but pretty cheap. My mother-in-law made the dress, and my father-in-law married us. The whole thing cost us under $5,000 and we all had a blast. I’ve been to a $70,000 and we had way more fun.

I remember when I was entertaining the thought of getting married, how I dreamed of the dress, the cake, the flowers, the pomp and circumstance.

Then I got to reading the ridiculously priced bridal magazines (easily 9-20 bucks themselves) and reading that the average wedding costs upwards of $20,000.

Knowing I’d have to pay for it myself, it really helped put things into perspective. I could use $20k for a lot of better things than a stupid dress I’d wear once, cake that I’d probably get smashed all over my expensive makeup anyways, flowers that will die in a few days anyways. As for pomp and circumstance, those aren’t really expensive. I can get the same thing for much cheaper. My friends and family love me whether I’m in a fancy dress or in sweats and a ponytail.

Then I decided not to get married, so it was a moot point anyways. :P

my husband and i eloped to the next county over and spent 50 bucks on the license and judge, then blew 200 bucks getting smashed with our closest friends. it was great!
