It’s not sanctimonious to try to do the right thing, it is sanctimonious to try and make yourself look like a plaster saint and sneer at someone else’s response so you can show off how *conscious* you are instead of addressing their argument.

It’s because that wasn’t the point of the article at all. You said “oh child labor!” and someone else said, “your best response had nothing to do with the point of the article.” And your response is “but child labor is *really* bad!”

TV commercials with that smug Verizon guy are *really* bad too, but they are irrelevant in the context of this discussion.

Lori V. It is of course deplorable to have 6 year olds working in sweatshops but when we close all those sweatshops down who exactly is going to support all those jobless 6 year olds? Got all the welfare and rescue programmes in place have we to ensure the poor little things don’t starve while we are breaking our arms trying to pat ourselves on the back for shutting down their exploiters? No we haven’t, not even nearly except in a few ’showcase’ instances so we can say how philanthropic we are. We go in there close these places down without having any but the most desultory ferking back up plans in place for the vast majority of the ‘emancipated’ who are then mostly turfed onto the streets and left to rot by their largely uncaring governments. Oh but we’ve done our bit haven’t we, we stopped them being exploited, if they starve afterwards that’s not OUR problem. Don’t preach at me about what your father has done and how YOU know what you are talking about. BS!!

You’re right, i… but I have at least three other “half-assed” (at least to the Fundies out there) reasons to hate them as well. So, I have two very “full-assed” reasons to avoid them. Three halves does, indeed, make two wholes, right?

If you’d like me to finish my argument, fine, but since my father-in-law retired as a high-ranking domestic sweatshop ballbuster in the Department of Labor, it is an issue that I know just a little bit about. I chose one of my “half-assed” reasons that was supported by a few FACTS, not just my OTHER “half-assed” reasons like swallowing up subsidy monies from local and state governments, racial & sexual discrimination, or encouraging their employees to sign up for public assistance rather than paying a living wage… oh, WAIT, those are all supported by a few FACTS, too.

I know very well why I hate Wal-Mart. And while I can’t say that I know for a FACT I’ve not bought a single piece of clothing made by an underpaid child in a developing nation, I CAN say that I haven’t bought ANYthing in almost a year from a multi-national corporation whose policy is to exploit said children. I CAN say that I TRY to be conscious of what I buy, and where I buy it, and why I buy it.

…and I think Zeitgeist is German and means something like “Spirit of the time”. Or something. Zeit is time and Geist is something like spirit. So my guess is Zeit+geist. Spirit-time. Or “Spirit of the time”, since that would sound much cooler than “spirit-time”.

I don’t like Walmart because it’s dirty and messy and filled with loud teenagers and fat trailer trash.

Also, their clothes are hideous.
