re: Mormonism = Calvinball

How is that any different from any of the OTHER cults of the christian persuasion?

re: atheists 'converting' theists...

I personally could not care any less what someone believes.... by a happy coincidence, if someone does not care to tell me about their beliefs, it never becomes relevant to a conversation.

If someone DOES go against the christian religion and share their faith (the bible tells you to keep it in the closet) then I usually just say "How nice..." and change the subject...

If, however, someone shows me an utter and complete lack of respect by trying to force their religion on me, then I will be happy to point out the lack of consistency between what Christianity teaches, what Christians believe and how Christians tend to act.

I find it very interesting (and often frustrating) that if I point out the negative side to religion, I am being intolerant, attacking someones religion, trying to convert them... but if someone comes to my door to try to save me by telling me what they perceive to be the negative side to "not-religion", I am intolerant and attacking religion if I am not thankful for them for coming to 'save' me.

Excellent point with the Calvinball! (My favourite sport, btw.) If they actually really really pick their prophet every now and then, the rules may change also along the way. Which may be a good thing. Christianity was probably a very good guideline and a mirror of society's morals when it was passed around from mouth to mouth. But when you hack the religion into stone (pun intended) it's not much of a mirror of society, than the society begins mirroring religion.

The more I hear about Mormonism the more I think it's the religious equivalent of Calvinball. Just make up the rules as you go along!

Also, the South Park episode that dealt with this subject is great.

The problem with this is that the Mormon idea of "calling" is different than your standard evangelical Christian version. Therefore, if you say that God said that you were "called" to become the next prophet, it wouldn't be for the mainline LDS Church. You would have to 1) Be called by someone who is already known on Earth as having authority and 2) be "set apart" by those same people to perform that duty.

The kind of calling described here would be a call to a new dispensation. That would only happen if no one held God's authority. Once a prophet for a new dispensation is called, all authority would have to be traced to them.

In other words, a non-bemused response would be:

"Your going to be the next Mormon Prophet? Does your Bishop or the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles know about this, because God would tell them first."

The reason I try to turn people to atheists has more to do with wanting people to be free of their mental shackles than anything else.

So far I have converted exactly 0 people. I guess most people would rather be happy than have to face the truth. Poor bastards.
