VA: The Next Mormon Prophet Will Be a Woman
Dec 13th, 2007
I have very few hard and fast rules about life, but one of them is ‘Never argue about religion.’ This doesn’t mean I won’t talk about religion, mind you, but […]

well I don’t hate you.
As an xmas gift, can you PLEASE go to Stephanie Klein’s blog and comment on it. She has a video and a”day in the life” segment which features 100s of photos of her for 24 hours. It is so shiteous, self-centered that you will both love it and want to scratch your eyes out.
So you’re the second coming of John Smith… I don’t doubt it.
… Are you serious? John Smith? What kind of ignorant ass hole are you? Joseph smith. Get your facts right.
Most of your information about the mormons is wrong, and that guy is an absolute brainless idiot. You of everyone should know not to generalize, V!
Why should she “of all people” know not to generalize? Everyone does it. Sorry, Dave.
I *love* discussions about religion. I grew up in a Jewish household, I have the unmistakably hebrew nose, I have the New-York-Jew accent, and yet, I don’t believe in God so I don’t consider myself part of the religion. That infuriates people, that I can grow up with God all around me and somehow think the old testament was written by regular people as a book of teachings, very exaggerated historical events, and laws to live by rather than fact. Evolution happened. Where is that in the bible?
Well, it infuriates Jews, anyway. Christians see it as an open window to start converting me. I usually do something along the lines of what V did. Go along with it, but not quite.
I couldn’t help but chuckle at this. Thanks for the story, V.
Oh yeah Joseph Smith…
And, it’s asshole. One word. What kind of ignorant asshole are you Davey Dave?
The reason I try to turn people to atheists has more to do with wanting people to be free of their mental shackles than anything else.
So far I have converted exactly 0 people. I guess most people would rather be happy than have to face the truth. Poor bastards.
The problem with this is that the Mormon idea of “calling” is different than your standard evangelical Christian version. Therefore, if you say that God said that you were “called” to become the next prophet, it wouldn’t be for the mainline LDS Church. You would have to 1) Be called by someone who is already known on Earth as having authority and 2) be “set apart” by those same people to perform that duty.
The kind of calling described here would be a call to a new dispensation. That would only happen if no one held God’s authority. Once a prophet for a new dispensation is called, all authority would have to be traced to them.
In other words, a non-bemused response would be:
“Your going to be the next Mormon Prophet? Does your Bishop or the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles know about this, because God would tell them first.”
The more I hear about Mormonism the more I think it’s the religious equivalent of Calvinball. Just make up the rules as you go along!
Also, the South Park episode that dealt with this subject is great.
Myroid draws his conclusions from cartoon characters.
I lived in Utah for three years.
Excellent point with the Calvinball! (My favourite sport, btw.) If they actually really really pick their prophet every now and then, the rules may change also along the way. Which may be a good thing. Christianity was probably a very good guideline and a mirror of society’s morals when it was passed around from mouth to mouth. But when you hack the religion into stone (pun intended) it’s not much of a mirror of society, than the society begins mirroring religion.
re: Mormonism = Calvinball
How is that any different from any of the OTHER cults of the christian persuasion?
re: atheists ‘converting’ theists…
I personally could not care any less what someone believes…. by a happy coincidence, if someone does not care to tell me about their beliefs, it never becomes relevant to a conversation.
If someone DOES go against the christian religion and share their faith (the bible tells you to keep it in the closet) then I usually just say “How nice…” and change the subject…
If, however, someone shows me an utter and complete lack of respect by trying to force their religion on me, then I will be happy to point out the lack of consistency between what Christianity teaches, what Christians believe and how Christians tend to act.
I find it very interesting (and often frustrating) that if I point out the negative side to religion, I am being intolerant, attacking someones religion, trying to convert them… but if someone comes to my door to try to save me by telling me what they perceive to be the negative side to “not-religion”, I am intolerant and attacking religion if I am not thankful for them for coming to ’save’ me.

V, your obsessive hatred or annoyance with Heather Armstrong is freaky shit. Get over it already.
