What gets me is that Prez and Veep and (fat ugly pig) Rove keep saying the same things - we're in terrible danger, the war in Iraq keeps the war *there* so it won't come *here* and so on.

I don't know if we're in terrible danger or not - who can say? Only those privy to the top secret secret top "don't tell the public how bad it is" can *really* understand if we're in danger or not. But can we believe them?

If the *reasons* we went to war in Iraq were true - WMDs, SH and his nukes and chemicals - then I'd be more inclined to believe that we're in terrible danger.

But those reasons have been exposed as lies: no WMDs, no nukes, no chemicals.

So how are we to believe what they say now?

I can't believe anything that comes out of the white house these days. For example, Prez goes to south america and insists that he's there to help the people out of poverty. Well what kind of BS is that when here - in America - the number of children living in poverty has risen to fucking 26% - TWENTY SIX PERCENT! - since Bush has been president?

And all this flag waving about "support the troops!" when even the flagship army hospital - Walter Reed - is exposed to be worse than some fucking rural human warehouse run by Nurse Ratched? White House says "we have to support our verterans" and SIMULTANEOUSLY CUTS FUNDING for the VA!

It's all bullshit. It's all lies. It's all crap. I know things are really bad because I'm quite sure that even Nixon didn't lie like this fucker and his cronies -- all of whom are making many millions of dollars and fucking up our rights.

Shit. Some kind of America!

The best exploration of truth i have ever read was from Tim O'brien in "The Things They Carried"

http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/pdocs/obrien_story.pdf

this is a chapter of his book that focuses on truth and the complexities of it.

So have we figured it out yet?
Is lying good, bad, neither, both?

I'd like to see all government officials worldwide always telling the truth, but I'm not sure who, if anyone, would benefit from that. Most people would probably just go 'batshit crazy'.

I am neither going to condone nor condemn lying...

If I had to lie to save 1000 of my friends, as opposed to only being able to save one of those friends by telling the truth, I'd lie.

But, isn't truth in the eye of the beholder? Or, is that beauty... I forget all of the lovely little cut & paste catch phrases.

The truth is, the 'truth' is just as manufactured as the 'lie'... same goes for 'beauty'. But, that's just what I'm saying right now... an hour from now my whole opinion on truth and lies and beauty may be flipped like a coin. I just wish the sun would shine for a while today.

Pabloe: Ok, I'm dense. I admit it. But, I don't get it - what was the lie? The story itself, or did the second guy lie and just say he used the condom when he didn't?

pabloe-

a) the unintending father would be responsible - although somewhat unfairly - as V would tell you, once you donate the sperm, you're locked in for 18 years...fair or not.

b)not less interesting for being a lie, but not entirely interesting to begin with - except maybe as a discussion on parental responsibilities - kinda like the 'is it murder if you shoot a person out a window, who is currently jumping off a building?'

c)hopefully not, because at least it was all contained within one post. which is my biggest problem with 'it' - 'it' being the number of times my poor finger has to roll the wheel to get to the good stuff :)
