Mar 15th, 2007
My husband’s youngest child has developed a bit of a lying problem. He lies to get out of trouble. He lies to avoid doing something he doesn’t enjoy. He lies […]

Well written again V…
Yeah it’s hard to tell what ‘truth’ really means anymore, much less discern who is lying and who is telling or showing the ‘truth’ at any given time. All you can do is trust what you know I guess… and even that is always questionable.
I know I have to go pick up my new bumper and that the sticker I bought from myroid is going to be strategically placed on said bumper as soon as it arrives.
YOU bought that? Thanks. :P
Back to the topic, I used to know a guy who was a complete compulsive liar. He lied about everything, mostly as a way to get attention. Bad for him though is that he was terrible at it. He ended up having almost no friends because any he had got so sick of his bullshit that they couldn’t stand to listen to him any more.
I heard of a girl recently who wove a tangled web of lies to her parents. She was living with her 21 boyfriend and had to keep lying to them to stay there. She’s in juvie now for the next three years. She’s 15.
So basically lying leads to trouble… if you do it too much. Can’t really say about lying in general.
“But if that is the case, then who do I believe? Where do I go for unbiased facts when every legitimate source is suspect?”
No worries, that’s what I’m here for.
One redeeming fact is that some people don’t actually realize that they are lying. Not to say that they have actually been misinformed, but they tell themselves something so often that it becomes true to them.
Many politicians are this way. They say that they want to help, they want to do their civic duty, when what they really want is score some LCD from their gay prostitute lover. These are the people that are lying to themselves, and unfortunately for them, they don’t even realize it.
I was gonna get a shirt… but I figured since my bumper cover disintegrated, and I decided to actually replace it, that a sticker would be more useful at the moment.
I hate tellin white lies. I dont tell a girl “you look nice in this dress” or smth, if i really dont mean it. so i dont say at all. I wouldnt tell my future preagnant wife “You look pretty” if she looks like a fat pig. no way. i was never taught to lie, i`m bad at it and people can really “detect” if i`m lying. bad for me.
don`t talk about politics and lying. they are all educated to lie and manipulate with voters. its just business. dirty business.
hmmmm…
I strive to be as honest and blunt as often as possible. While I’m a
good liar when I need to be, I find that in many situations the brutally honest truth simplifies things a whole lot. No need to spend the effort crafting some elaborate story to cover one’s true feelings. Allow me to demonstrate:
Version 1:
————–
“Are you coming to the party?”
“I can’t make it”
“Why not?”
“Oh well, ummm .. I can’t make it to the party . . because umm . . I’m helping Mike work on his house.”
“Mike’s coming to the party.”
“I uh . . meant Suzie . . . ”
Version 2:
————–
“Are you coming to the party?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t feel like it.”
See? Much simpler.
One of the greatest lies I have ever heard, was also one of the more interesting thought provoking tales. Was it a bad thing? I’ll tell you the story and let you decide:
Friend: I had dinner the other night with a friend of mine who is a judge in family court and he told me the craziest story.
Me: Yeah…what’s that?
Friend: There was this case he heard where two teenage couples were on a double date, two in the front seat, two in the back. They parked somewhere and intended to have sex. The problem was they only had one condom. In the infinite wisdom of teenage lust, the clearly intelligent thing to do would be to share the condom. Front seat couple fucked first while the backseat couple engaged in foreplay. Being teenagers, the boys lacked stamina and it was not a long wait. The condom was passed to the back seat and no self respecting boy would want to stick his junk in the spunk of another, so he turned the condom inside out. A few minutes of pumping and he was done.
A month later, the backseat girl found out she was pregnant. The sperm came from the kid in the front seat who had never had sex with her.
Me: Wow, that is gross AND fucked up!
Who is responsible for child support? Who has legal paternal responsibilities? Is it a less interesting story because it is probably a lie? Is “admin” going to yell at me because I am posting long things that are only vaguely related to VA?
Nice post - thanks.
pabloe-
a) the unintending father would be responsible - although somewhat unfairly - as V would tell you, once you donate the sperm, you’re locked in for 18 years…fair or not.
b)not less interesting for being a lie, but not entirely interesting to begin with - except maybe as a discussion on parental responsibilities - kinda like the ‘is it murder if you shoot a person out a window, who is currently jumping off a building?’
c)hopefully not, because at least it was all contained within one post. which is my biggest problem with ‘it’ - ‘it’ being the number of times my poor finger has to roll the wheel to get to the good stuff :)
:)
(that last part sounded a little dirtier than i intended it too!)
((OMG i totally did two posts in a row!! - can we say hypocrite?))
“I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you”
-Friedrich Nietzsche
Pabloe: Ok, I’m dense. I admit it. But, I don’t get it - what was the lie? The story itself, or did the second guy lie and just say he used the condom when he didn’t?
So have we figured it out yet?
Is lying good, bad, neither, both?
I’d like to see all government officials worldwide always telling the truth, but I’m not sure who, if anyone, would benefit from that. Most people would probably just go ‘batshit crazy’.
I am neither going to condone nor condemn lying…
If I had to lie to save 1000 of my friends, as opposed to only being able to save one of those friends by telling the truth, I’d lie.
But, isn’t truth in the eye of the beholder? Or, is that beauty… I forget all of the lovely little cut & paste catch phrases.
The truth is, the ‘truth’ is just as manufactured as the ‘lie’… same goes for ‘beauty’. But, that’s just what I’m saying right now… an hour from now my whole opinion on truth and lies and beauty may be flipped like a coin. I just wish the sun would shine for a while today.
The best exploration of truth i have ever read was from Tim O’brien in “The Things They Carried”
http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/pdocs/obrien_story.pdf
this is a chapter of his book that focuses on truth and the complexities of it.
hmmmm….
Wow, powerful post, V! Very thought provoking indeed.
What gets me is that Prez and Veep and (fat ugly pig) Rove keep saying the same things - we’re in terrible danger, the war in Iraq keeps the war *there* so it won’t come *here* and so on.
I don’t know if we’re in terrible danger or not - who can say? Only those privy to the top secret secret top “don’t tell the public how bad it is” can *really* understand if we’re in danger or not. But can we believe them?
If the *reasons* we went to war in Iraq were true - WMDs, SH and his nukes and chemicals - then I’d be more inclined to believe that we’re in terrible danger.
But those reasons have been exposed as lies: no WMDs, no nukes, no chemicals.
So how are we to believe what they say now?
I can’t believe anything that comes out of the white house these days. For example, Prez goes to south america and insists that he’s there to help the people out of poverty. Well what kind of BS is that when here - in America - the number of children living in poverty has risen to fucking 26% - TWENTY SIX PERCENT! - since Bush has been president?
And all this flag waving about “support the troops!” when even the flagship army hospital - Walter Reed - is exposed to be worse than some fucking rural human warehouse run by Nurse Ratched? White House says “we have to support our verterans” and SIMULTANEOUSLY CUTS FUNDING for the VA!
It’s all bullshit. It’s all lies. It’s all crap. I know things are really bad because I’m quite sure that even Nixon didn’t lie like this fucker and his cronies — all of whom are making many millions of dollars and fucking up our rights.
Shit. Some kind of America!
