Original post: Tax Breaks and Other Questions
Somehow this reminds me of McGyver - Season 5.
Not that the charity wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’m all for charity to places where it actually does good.
But V’s writing style is my main concern. Has someone hijacked her account?
I think I’ll check re-runs of Season 1 and 2 instead.
It’s odd that V seems annoyed with the fact that some of us are only in this for the picture. Duh. If we were in this for the kids then she wouldn’t need to have a charity challenge in the first place. Sure it’s for a good cause, but why use a reward to entice people to donate and then bitch about the fact that people are enticed by that reward?
I’d like to point out that some of us don’t own half a city block and aren’t rich. Those 90 bucks donations you expect are all some of us have left a month after paying our rent and power. And those tiny $5 donations you so casually dismiss mean living off of Ramens for a week for a few days people.
I’m donating a pretty small amount, but then again I don’t have a job at the moment so $15 is all I can spare right now (I literally have $15.67 in my account).
I think V is talking about people like Catherine, so self-absorbed that they don’t even care about the lives of abused children enough to donate $2. I get that people are enticed by the picture (I was enticed by the $500, personally), but at least give a decent amount like $5 or $10 instead of being assholes.
I don’t believe that the argument I’m making is in any way dependent upon how much money I donated. My point is, in giving people a motivation to donate something at all, it’s ridiculous to then criticize people for donating because of that reason.
I think it’s ridiculous that the picture is a motivation at all.
Well, V can now fuck off with her charity challenge, if the small donation I was going to make isn’t good enough. It isn’t about being “in it for the picture” - if I was the sort of person to work hard all week and then hand my wages to someone else, I’d be doing it already without some random woman on a website asking me to. I was going to make a donation just because someone whose blog has given me a bit of entertainment was running a charity drive, but if it only matters when we give large amounts, I won’t bother.
To me, it seemed like V was specifically picking on people who only donated one or two dollars. In case all of you have been living on mars and don’t know how PayPal works, I’ll fill you in. Papal charges a small fee when out of the money that gets sent — sometimes it’s even more than a dollar. So most (or all) of that $1 payment is wasted.
If you can’t afford to donate $5 — you shouldn’t be donating to anything. If you can’t afford five dollars, you are broke enough that you need to keep the money and spend it on food/shelter/etc. Like I said, I can only afford to donate $15 and frankly I couldn’t give two shits if V appreciates the sentiment. As a young person who grew up being abused, I know that the kids WILL appreciate the money.
But actually I didn’t get the same vibe that you guys did from that post. Is someone who donated $150 doing more than me for this cause? Absolutely. In fact, they’re doing ten times what I am able to do. So all you self-righteous assholes need to keep it in perspective.
These kids will benefit a hell of a lot more from $100 than from $1, and if that basic fact will keep you from donating at all then you’re heartless AND bad at math.
I agree. I think V is pissed because people are supposed to be motivated by the kids, not her cleavage. I think you made a good point in your first post when you said that if the kids motivated everyone, we wouldn’t need a charity challenge. But I also think that it’s easy for people to forget about stuff like this when they’re not exposed to it day-to-day. Most people need a reminder that not everyone has a decent life, or they need an opportunity to help without messing around with the salvation army or other biased organizations.
Griffin, different paypal accounts work differently, paypal doesn’t take any money out of the transactions I receive, but I know it does for various business accounts.
Griffin, different paypal accounts work differently, paypal doesn’t take any money out of the transactions I receive, but I know it does for various business accounts. I would hope that V would have the sense to have an account that doesn’t take flat sums out of every transaction when she specifically said something like “if each of my RSS readers donates only 1.25 I’ll reach the goal”.
Whatever. Both of the kids in the graphic look like they deserve a punch in the face.
I’d just like to say, thanks to V; you raise a good point about people only being in it for the picture, so instead I’m going to ‘donate’ to a website that shows videos of naked ladies.
Also: does anyone else find it funny that in an earlier post, V said “if everyone subscribed to my rss feed simply donated $1.25, we can meet the goal” and then called the people who donated small amounts names.
I suspect she was being glib.
Yeah, I mean 8000 people donating $1.25 is a lot less likely than 1000 people donating $10 each.
I hope that if V does post her picture, she’s giving us double middle fingers and an “fuck you” look. Like she just smelled rotten milk or something. And the bikini should be worn OVER a pair of jeans and a huge down ski jacket. I will laugh.
If she doesn’t post her pic after the contest someone should post her pic from the old site with her two different sized breasts.
V’s blog has been really boring lately. It makes me wonder if he/she’s purposely turning it to shit so people will stop caring and he/she won’t have to post a picture that a bunch of people will end up photoshopping to make it look like he/she’s eating shit.
she said that if only her rss readers donated a dollar or so then it would be wonderful. i am an rss reader and though flat broke can spare a dollar or two, but then she goes and disses those who do what she suggests. ARRGGGHHHH
