Original post: Ineffectual Parenting is to Blame for the Majority of the School Shootings

Well… V, I loved the story, but there are of course exceptoins to every rule. I am one of those “perpetual losers,” but I’m not filled with actual rage. Not that there are some people who I wouldn’t mind seeing mauled by bears, but I certainly would never push them into the bear cage… so to speak. I don’t really care whether I ever “come out on top” in any situation or if I’m always a bottom feeder. One of the only things I’ve actually learned over the years is that “success” is an illusion… or a delusion… if you will.
For me… just being the “perpetual loser” in anyone’s mind makes me the winner by default. And, most likely I’ll never get to see anyone mauled by a bear. Actually, with my luck… if I did see someone mauled by a bear it would be someone I actually liked.
I don’t necessarily disagree with the premise of your article, I just think school shootings are fucking boring and bear maulings are much more… well… interesting… mostly because bears aren’t typically ineffectual parents.
Ok thumbs down. I agree. I don’t really want to see any bear maulings.
Anyway I do take an interest in the rest of the animal kingdom because… humans are a dime a dozen and are frankly… and I apologize in advance… quite boring and predictable, at least to me.
I found this headline on cnn.com and had to chuckle…
Study: Female cheetahs sleep around
Alright, what I really meant to say was… no comment.
Great story!
Good for you, V. The only link ever found between school shootings was bullying. Nothing else has fit. All the sharks/lawyers have tried to link them with deep pocket folks: gun manufacturers, the schools, video games. This false linkage is just for them to make a buck off a tragedy.
The dumbest thing I have read is that we can’t stop bullying behavior. Give me a break. The people that say that are the bullies. Every see what has happened with Don Imus, Howard Stern etc. Any time they say anything offensive people are all over their ass. If the parents could be sued if Johnny makes fun of another kid or beats him up, the bullying would stop tommorrow.
But as you point out though, it is important for kids to learn to stand up for themselves. Calling someone Robin Birdbath is a heckuva lot better for the kid and society than law suits.
Not entirely sure bullying back is always a good idea, but neither is leaving your kid helpless. My parents told me pretty much the same thing when I was teased as a kid, although I don’t recall any specific advice like your mother’s. Most of it also involved the whole “not letting it affect you/not making yourself a target” thing, which helped. Still, it took a long time for me to truly build up my self esteem to the point where I could consider myself a “winner”, or at least not a loser, so there’s definitely something to be said for encouraging your kids to stick up for themselves.
While I agree that parents should teach children to stand up for themselves, I don’t think you can say not doing so is what is leading to most of these school shootings. Nor is only the video games, or the gun manufacturers, etc. You can’t just pin it on one thing - its a combination of things that have to do with both the environment and the person who is committing the crime. A lot of kids are bullyed - not all of them turn violent. We are all a product of both our genes and our environment. It seems that people are trying to look for easy answers, but there isn’t one. Nobody really knows what finally causes someone to snap or how to prevent it.
hey v,
want to see some ineffectual parenting that likewise highlights mothers praising looks above all else? Check out what this harpie does to her 9 year old!

I do think it’s a bit strange how the thumbs down come out as –1 though,
cuz isn’t that exactly the same as +1? Is it actually even thumbs up and down? I mean… three fingers and a thumb…. So one digit has been strategically removed from each hand or something? Whatever… since my main goal with everything in general is to even the playing field, If it’s +0 I just leave it alone… sometimes, or –1 I hit “thumbs up” or whatever cuz it’s a yes or no world, thumbs up, thumbs down… ooops what I meant to say was… no comment.
wait a minute that’s not what I typed — – 1 is the same as +1, duh.
Ooops sorry… I meant no comment.
V seems awfully preachy in her parenting posts for not being an actual parent
Interesting ideas on the subject. And while I do agree in part with V’s ideas, I still think declining morals in general play HUGE a role too.
Jenny, I think I know why V is vehement in her opinions on parenting. Like V, I don’t have children and don’t want children and have taken steps not to become a parent. Mainly because, though I like kids, I can’t stand parents and never want to compromise my integrity by joining their ranks. Once a person crosses that line into baby-making, it’s like they lose a piece of their brain, the kid is ALL and the adult whose entire identity is tied up in being a parent can no longer think or behave objectively. Their whiny little brats become the center of the universe, not just for them but anyone in the vicinity. And then they intersperse the self-centeredness with neglect and rationalizations. Bleecch. And that’s another thing that parents think is that non-breeding adults are incapable of understanding or performing child-rearing. Get a clue, us non-breeders are the ones picking up the breeders’ slack. I know I am. And then we’re censured… because we didn’t squeeze the little pups out ourselves. All the food prep, laundry, diapering, entertaining that we non-parents do doesn’t even qualify us for an opinion.
“Jenny: V seems awfully preachy in her parenting posts for not being an actual parent…”
Gee, Jenny… thank you for disenfranchizing tons of step-parents who do more to raise children than their deadbeat bio-folks…
cj, you have no idea what being a parent is about if you truly believe what you wrote. I know that many of the parents in the U.S. are idiots. But many Muslims are extremist and kill for their cause - you can’t decide that being Muslim is akin to being an extremist and/or murderer just because of one small group ruining it for the whole bunch. That kind of stereotypical bullshit is exactly what this country does NOT need.
V, you’re brilliant. I find this desire to link video games (and entertainment as a whole) to individual violent actions to be totally absurd. It’s just as valid to try linking violence to the weather or the phase of the moon. I don’t think it’s quite as simple as being bullied, but I don’t doubt that contributes.
Hey Jenny984,
VA has stepkids so… SHUT THE FUCK UP! ;p **Mwah**
