I agree on the "keeping it together for the kids".
I was 3 months pregnant when my husband died in a car accident. I had to hold it together and not freak out and lose my baby.
My son is a year old now and he has seen me cry one time and only because he came in the room and I didn't realize it.
If I, at 21 years old, can keep it together through his death, my pregnancy and now my life as a widowed single mother... some stupid woman can keep it together after a car accident that was HER FAULT!

You have a very interesting life even if it isn't really all that eventful.
I love the way you write. I do not always agree with you which is another reason I like you're writing. I don't like to read something I TOTALLY agree with because then I have nothing to complain about and rant about. Ha.

I am glad I've stumbled upon this blog!

V is the ONLY person I have ever heard about in 50 years that experienced what I did in a car accident. I also got hit by another car and ended up on somebody's lawn, wondering how the hell I got there. Never did recall the events (including the impact) leading up to the point when people were opening my car door and asking if I was OK. Weird.

It's funny, I hadn't even thought of questioning whether it was fact of fiction until a few weeks ago. I had been reading VA for a couple of weeks, and I linked my girlfriend to 'feminists ruined my sex life.' She wondered out loud whether or not she was actually a woman. The thought has been coming up in my mind every so often, and I always reach the same conclusion.

Why would it matter if she was a he or if all this shit was made up? How would it possibly make a difference?

The fact that I agree with most things V says would not change, and I'd still have rough sex with my girlfriend. Because she loves that shit.

How often does V talk to her insurance agent? We haven't even gotten an update on the neighbor's beater pickup yet, and now she is trying to convince them to light her car on fire? She might as well have them stop by once a week, it would probably be easier. (And I don't want to know how much she pays for coverage, eeek.)

Everyone's life is boring to THEM so the mundane things other people do day to day always seem more interesting and exciting. And it's all in the way "You tell 'em" to paraphrase an old British comedian. VA may not be the world's greatest speller or grammatician but she clearly has the 'storyteller gene' which defines all good writers, they can write for pages and pages where nothing or very little happens yet still make you feel like you've lived an adventure.

The issue of being brave for our kids, well she's hit it on the nail, we as adults have no business not stepping up and ACTING as if we're fine and in control when involved in a crisis if our kids are present. Breakdown time is later when kids are in bed. Sure, if I'd nearly killed my own kid through inattention to the road and traffic on it I'd probably be racked with guilt too but to then compound that near miss when the kid must be in shock and scared anyway by going to pieces and making them even more scared I'd deserve a good smack across the face.

Excellent post.

If you have a kid, take care of it. I agree 100% - No excuses! Having a nervous breakdown rarely solves anything. No point to transfer your traumas to the kid. Not enough people support VHEMT anyways. "Be fruitful and fill the land." Yeah, let's put a check mark on that one. Mission accomplished. And if a person doesn't even look when driving from a yard and you are driving with a baby, you shouldn't a) have a car b) have a baby c) all of the above.

About that if this is real or not... Who cares? The difference between real life and fiction is that fiction has to be credible. If it's fiction, it's a nice moral story. If it's true, then well... things happen in life. I have similar issues. My life is boring. Yet, when I explain to someone "that reminds me, when we were driving in Germany and decided to go to have an ice-cream in Italy and we were just driving over the Alps..." someone stops me and asks "wait a second... who drives to Italy just for an ice-cream? I don't belive you." ... What do you say to that? We had a new car that had to be driven in, so we had few hundred kilometres to spare... I'm sorry if my life seems "unbelievable". It's boring most of the time, though. When you have to drive through 3 different countries, it sounds so far - well, it's not. From Munich to Venice is not that far drive.

P.S. - Quite trusting to drive in city area and not paying extra attention to sidestreets, but to listen to music and nod with the beat... I don't trust other drivers that much. I know only one good driver - Ayrton Senna - and I think even he died in a car accident.

All this article does is restate a well known fact.
Two women driving on the same road, an accident was bound to happen.
