A pretty picture from the NIH that juxtaposes (increasing) percentage of kids sleeping on their backs with (decreasing) percentage of SIDS events:

http://www.nichd.nih.gov/sids/upload/SIDS_rate_backsleep_03.pdf

It is quite a strong relationship.

Again, this does not account for all cases, but it does account for such a substantial amount that it's untenable to attribute SIDS in general mostly to deliberate infanticide.

Seems odd to me that about 10 years of the AAP's "Back to Sleep" program led to a decrease in SIDS cases of >50%. Who knew that having parents roll their infants onto their backs for sleep would prevent so many parents from killing those same kids?

*rolleyes*

Sure, intentional harm must factor into some cases. The data doesn't support the claim that this holds true for all, most, or even many.

And as John Beaty alluded to, unexpected infant deaths are investigated with autopsies. This is routine. As a pediatrician, I have been to several, and they were all quite thorough. I'd rather not attend any more, but I'm sure I will.

I was a student interested in Pathology and witnessed several infant autopsies. Everyone here has a point. Most, but not all, unexplained deaths are granted autopsies. SIDS is not an COD. Detecting suffocation in an infant can be very difficult, even with microscopic examination of capillaries in mucosa. The petichiae are just not always there. Its a very tricky situation.

I originally interperted it as retarded "mothers" of retarded babies and my not so kind comment was going to be that the mentally handicapped mothers are more nurturing than the smart mothers, but alas, I read it wrong.

Stan, you're a cop, right? Done multiple investigations, of unexplained infant death? Want to pony up some reality?

2 years as a cop, and I can tell you for absolute certain you have your head up your ass about how police handle infant death.

Like the poster said, it's about exclusion. It's VERY easy for a coroner to spot asphyxiation, even in a newborn. And cops are taught to look for signs. Go get a clue or two.

I lost a sibling to what might have been written off as SIDS, but documented symptoms during his life warranted further investigation. It turned out that he was born with multiple avenous malformations in the brain, a handful of which resulted in the cerebral hemorrhages that killed him. He's dead and doesn't care if I joke about what happened. Sometimes people even try to allay their guilt at laughing at my jokes by donating to March of Dimes.

Sometimes the lulz writes itself. And sometimes it's just funny to tell people that my first little brother was weak, so we killed him and ate his bones. (After we tried to sell him to the white slavers, of course.)

Whoops, I forgot the other scenario:

Cops: "Who smothered your baby?"

Mother: "I think a black guy did it. A big black guy. Very scary looking black guy."

Cops: "Makes sense. Larry, round me up some niggers."

Sunny:

They don't do real investigations into unexplained infant deaths unless they have other reasons to expect foul play. Maybe you're watching too much CSI Miami, but they don't autopsy every person who dies.

And even in the rare cases when they do, the investigation usually goes something like this:

Cop: "Your baby stopped breathing last night. Did you smother it with a pillow?"

Mother: "How dare you!"

Father: "I wasn't even home, but there's no way my wife could ever do something like that."

Cops: "Must have been a SIDS pillow."

Case closed.

SIDS babies stop breathing. It wouldn't be that hard to suffocate a newborn and blame it on SIDS. Autopsy would show suffocation which is exactly what SIDS is. They.Stop.Breathing.

Grow a brain and take a joke people.
