Last we heard they were hiking together. Several months ago she said she was starting agility lessons with her dog. I hope it's treatable, whatever it is and the dog gets better. There are always going to be some people who care more for their pets than others, but in general the more time you spend with a pet, the more it matters to you. Going to classes together, going on hiking trips together...it all adds up. I don't think it's showing any disrespect to compare losing a beloved pet to having a miscarriage, or for that matter to losing any loved one. Non-pet owners are that way for a reason - because they lack the ability to care for someone other than themselves or insular little families. On the other end of the spectrum, I do think there is a limit to what is reasonable when caring for and being attached to a pet. I mean I love my dog, but if it needed a hip replacement or something expensive I'd put her to sleep.
