Friend: I’m sorry. I know it’s horrible when your pet is sick and you don’t know what to do to make her feel better.
V: What is really driving me crazy […]
Original post: Animals Aren’t Replaceable Accessories

subtle dig at Dooce in there? you’re gonna get flamed for this by the mommyblogger megulls, heh heh
I’m sorry your pet is sick V, hope he recovers quickly. Some people just don’t appreciate that animals are important members of our families. Mind you your friend who dismisses 6th week of pregnancy miscarriage so coolly, while she has a point about not even ‘knowing’ the fetus, she makes herself look as callous and unthinking as those who can’t empathise with losing a beloved pet. From the moment conception is confirmed in the majority of cases where the preganacy is planned and much wanted the emotional investment in the potential baby starts then and there. You can’t quantify any profound emotional attachment be that for a person, a ‘potential’ person or a pet in terms of time elapsed since you ‘knew’ someone or something.
Mind you, that said - the evil side of me can’t wait for the hysterical overreactions among some of the mommybloggers when they read that. Should be hilarious.
My dog is practically our son. We adore him and couldn’t imagine life without him! No matter how terrible life seems, we can always come home and count on our dog to make us smile. I could never imagine replacing him. I feel ya V, my dog started throwing up constantly a couple months ago and I’ve never cried so hard thinking we could lose him. He’s all better now thank god! ALWAYS have the number and location to a 24 hour vet on hand just in case
I am so sorry that your dog is sick - I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to feel unable to comfort her. We love our cats and dog and so much and when our dog was lost, we were inconsolable.
I can also relate to the loss of a pregnancy and agree that the loss can really be profound.
However, I don’t understand your jump from hating insensitive people to ‘hating this country’ - I don’t think this behavior is peculiar to the USA; there are probably insensitive louts worldwide.
Don’t worry Donna, it’s not.
Yea sure, her dog is sick and that’s sad… whatever. Connecting insensitivity to this country is ridiculous. People here care about animals so much it’s crazy to me- Americans are all over animals. They sleep with them, for Christ’s sake! They take them to vets all the time. They save them from the streets and from hillbillies.
In my country, no one gives a damn about pets. “You can get another one” is the exact reaction. From the OWNERS. You’d be hard-pressed to find a moral vegetarian or an animal rights campaigner, or even someone who’ll let their dog on the carpet, let alone in their bed.
Although there are criticisms to Americans (like for everybody), calling them insensitive or uncaring (as a group of people) is definitely not one of them.
This might happen if you put a dollar sign on every friggin’ thing. How much is life worth? How much is health worth? How about non-human life or health?
If a country cannot even take care of their sick (how much is an aspirin in a hospital?), why would someone care about non-humans?
I bet the thinking goes something like:
Health = $
New pet = $
If $ (health) > $ (new pet), discard old pet, get a new one.
…sick.
I would have drained my savings and maxed out all my credit cards if money were the only obstacle to saving my cat’s life.
I hope the doggy gets better.

What’s with the “comment doesn’t exist” when it obviously does?
error
People who have never been pet owners have no idea what it is like to have a pet and the emotional investment put into. Non-pet owners are that way for a reason - because they lack the ability to care for someone other than themselves or insular little families.
On the other end of the spectrum, I do think there is a limit to what is reasonable when caring for and being attached to a pet. I mean I love my dog, but if it needed a hip replacement or something expensive I’d put her to sleep.
You need new friends.
Anyone who would say that would immediately be off my be-nice-to list.
In fact, I can’t imagine someone that would say that getting past my idiot radar in the first place.
You need better idiot radar.
What happened to her dog? Last we heard they were hiking together. Several months ago she said she was starting agility lessons with her dog. I hope it’s treatable, whatever it is and the dog gets better.
There are always going to be some people who care more for their pets than others, but in general the more time you spend with a pet, the more it matters to you. Going to classes together, going on hiking trips together…it all adds up. I don’t think it’s showing any disrespect to compare losing a beloved pet to having a miscarriage, or for that matter to losing any loved one. The people who have never had a great relationship with a pet will never understand how terrible it can be when you lose them.
Well, I thought everyone liked animals. Like it was a given or something. Hey, if ya like people… ya like animals. No?
We haven’t heard from V in a week - I have a bad feeling about this. I hope it isn’t due to her dog.
