This morning, I woke up fairly early because I had planned to take my dog hiking. My dog, sensing that I had something planned, followed me around the house, tail […]
Original post: America is Doomed to Fall Because its Citizens Lack Basic Survival Skills

Abolish the 2nd amendment??? That’ll be the show of shows…
The buck must not have been in rut yet otherwise it would’ve it either would’ve killed you or knocked you up. You’re a lucky lady.
Information about survival from the library?
Yes, good start. You can learn the theory about how to play a guitar and how to survive in the nature. But there’s only one way to learn how to _play_ a guitar…
Double dose of irrationality mixed with a hint of anarchy. Mm Mm.
There are some things for which you simply can’t prepare. It’s possible that one of your step kids could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Do they have a library book for that?
I don’t think we are despised by other cultures. The media would LIKE you to think that, but the fact that the waiting list for immigrants is tens of thousands long makes me think otherwise. Plus, all the illegals pouring in from Texas and Florida…..
I too believe that we as a society are doomed to fail because we can no longer provide for ourselves. I believe that Katrina demonstrated how dependant we have become. How many people do you know that could grow their own crops, kill and butcher an animal for food, catch a fish, etc.? I could give half of america a bag of seeds and a hoe and they’d run straight to the grocery store. The ability to make food without help is dying in our country.
As for basic wilderness survival, yes, a buck can attack and kill you. Also don’t suck the poison out of a snake bite. Doing so can kill you too and won’t do much to help the other person.
I think it’s fairly naive to assume the majority of North Americans are ‘helpless’ in this capacity. Only recently did the world’s population move away from being more than 50% rural. 50 million americans still live in non metropolitan areas.
Spend any amount of time with the people who live in the rural areas of this country and you’ll see how many of them are capable of fending for themselves. Hunting, fishing, basic agriculture, small engine repair, and a plethora of other skills are at their disposal. Urban communities may be full of helpless city-dwellers, but a world does exist outside of suburbia still. Granted, it’s shrinking, but it’s there.
I had a roommate in college who couldn’t make Easy Mac without ruining it. And I knew other girls in my hall who would send their laundry to the cleaners because they didn’t know how the machines worked (I went to a college with mostly wealthy students)…
So yea, I’ve thought about this. I think we’d more have to worry about people with guns and such running around wreaking havoc, especially since all the jailed people and crazy folk would not have a system to keep them in.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying we are despised by everyone, but trust me, the U.S. has some serious image problems these days. Much, much worse than it ever has been — and in my opinion for a lot of good reasons. I think a lot of people still really do like our country. It just really pains them to see the path we have been taking recently.
By the way, I live overseas so I hear crap everyday. It honestly didn’t used to be like this.
Most of the world likes U.S. citizens (finding us amusing most likely), just they don’t like the government much.
Olb: Of course no-one can say they don’t like some particular nationality, that would be generalizing. Not all Americans are alike…
But I can’t say I’m racist; I hate eveyone equally.
I don’t know if VA”s reaction to situation is really a lack of basic survivial skills. She got scared, and caught off-guard… I’ve found myself freezing in my tracks when somethign unexpectedly happens. It certainly doesn’t mean I can survive. VA I think what happened to you was scarey, but from your story, it seems you handled yourself well. You stayed calm, and collected, and you were thinking the situation out as it happened - you seem pretty normal to me. =)
For all you ignorant media worshipping jackasses that believe the world hates us, look up what Sarkozy said to Congress recently. I have been around the world and most of the hillbillies in other countries are ok with the US. (Yes, hillbillies can be found in every country.) Rich priviledged snobs on the other hand have some sort of axe to grind.
As for the country being in shambles…you couldn’t sit in a cozy coffee shop wondering about who is going to be voted off next in tonight’s episode of Idol if the country was in shambles.
James Kim: I have undying admiration for this gentleman. He died trying to save his family. He may have been a techno-geek but he was no pussy. He humped over 16 miles in rough terrain in the harshest of conditions for two days before cashing in his chips. Granted, if he had some training his odds would have improved but the test he faced would have challenged an expert in survival. I’ve had to survive in that environment fully equipped and it kicked my ass.
Patriot Act: Really, what rights have you lost due to the Patriot Act? How has it affected your life? Or for that matter anyone you know? Hell, how has it affected anyone you have heard of?
Bush: Do you really hate Bush? If you do that’s cool. Most people who say that they hate Bush say that because its trendy to hate Bush. They hate Bush because the comedians and talking heads tell us to hate Bush because …well everyone hates him.
Corrupt Government: This is no news flash. There has always been corruption in the government. Let me look in my crystal ball and predict the future. Holy schitzky! I see corruption in the government 100 years from now!
The War: Christ, no one wants to fight in a war. Everyone is for it at the beginning but when bullets are flying and the bodies are dropping all of a sudden folks have an epiphany that war ain’t so grand and romantic. I have been in several of our nation’s conflicts. These were not very pleasant experiences. People were trying to kill me. In all fairness I was trying to kill them too. Nothing personal. My daughter decided she wanted to join the National Guard. I explained to the harsh facts of living in war zone without the romance of patriotism. (In a firefight you don’t fight for your country, you fight for your squad or platoon. Its a tribal thing.) She decided to join anyway and went to Iraq. I did not want her to go. However, she is not a little girl. She is a woman. I am damn proud of her. By God’s grace she came back fit and whole.
Is this war wise or not? Hell, I don’t know. Time will tell. As a soldier these kind of thoughts are a tactical liability. As a soldier, It is my duty to fight any and all wars I am commanded to fight. This is my job. As a civilian it is your job to decide if the war is worthy from the beginning. Once we pull the trigger we should not quit until forced to do so by the enemy. Last time I checked the enemy in Iraq can’t do this. That is why they use IED’s and car bombs. Taking casualities is not the same as losing a firefight, skirmish, battle or war. We should stay until we are done. If that means this will be next 100 year war, so be it.
America Soft? : Yeah, some of us Americans are soft. It has always been that way. We’ve always had soft Americans. Don’t worry, there are plenty of hard Americans to carry the soft. If your house catches fire it will be a hard ass who drags you from the inferno. If some jackass invades your home it will be a hard ass that the 911 dispatcher will send to take care of him. If your kid wonders off into the woods a group of hard asses will volunteer to beat the bushes looking for him.
You are a tough lady V. You felt the adrenalin of fight or flight for the first time. (BTW nausea is a common feeling in the aftermath, puking does not mean you are pussy.) You have survived some tough shit in your life, so I am confident that your common sense and resolve will serve you in most survival situations. (although training and knowledge will help.) Don’t be so hard on yourself or Americans.
