VA: Grow The Fuck Up, Ryan Holiday
Oct 14th, 2007
Today, I read something so fucking funny that I almost swallowed a piece of bubblegum, I was laughing so hard.
I’m going to copy the entire post here in full, rather […]
Original post: Grow The Fuck Up, Ryan Holiday

What if there are a good # of people “out to get you…” the meaning of which is always debatable. Then what?
Or… what if in some ‘”way, shape, or form,’” they… already got you?
Wow. That guy is truly something. I think V sums him up pretty well. He’s either going to burn out or explode in the next few years and the world will be much better for it.
Leave Marigold out of it. He has a nervous condition.
I think V misread that one. The “worst” thing isn’t driving slow, but being mediocre in such a way that forces everyone else to become mediocre as well. Its just that the driving slow thing is his “example”. Basically a dead weight/weak link in chain.
I think that’s more of an issue in this generation than the “me” factor. (But really, its all tied together.) Its basically like the one person in a class, who is unwilling/unable to grasp a concept, and consistently asking questions that have been answered, taking up class time, while the rest of the class has to wait for them to figure it out or give up before continuing. Or if you need someone to do a task “A” before you can do task “B” and you know they should be able to finish it quickly, but takes a month.
Its really a matter of efficiency, and driving slow in rush hour impedes on not just your or my time, but everyone else’s. It also increases the risk of accidents for everyone, because there’s always going to be someone who will be in a rush and drive more wrecklessly, while cars are more packed, etc.
(Yeah, I have a pet peeve against driving slowly, and driving way too fast, and lane hoping to get 1 car ahead for no reason, and people not using turn signals until the very last moment, and a whole slew of other things)
Additional note: Its also possible that I misread, really depends on what his blog trends are, and hell if I’m going to read through his blog just to find out.=)
He’s probably one of several I’ve noticed lately that have no patience on the road, which leads to me having no patience with them. Had two guys recently seem to completely ingore the whole “yield” sign deal on merging onramps. Then the ones who seem to think crossing a 4 way light on a left turn against oncomming traffic that has the right of way should be a run n’ gun because they’re in a hurry. I’m cautious because far too many people chance things these days because they’re selfish, sloppy and talking on their effin cell phones. Perhaps I’m just gunshy after one chickie cost $4k damage to my truck (likely totaled her car) because she thought she could make it across 2 lanes of traffic. She was lucky I had a place to swerve thus not hitting her head on at her drivers side door but her front end hitting my right front quarter.
Olb: Even if that’s what he meant, I’m still really having a hard time with the idea that forcing mediocrity on others is the most evil thing a person can do — after all, we’ve still got rape, torture, and murder to consider, and that’s just the starting point.
I wonder if he’s blaming his own failings on these evildoers who are dragging him down to their level…
Maybe it would’ve been better if the title would’ve been:
“Pet peeve #23453453: People who drive slow on the fast lane.”
That is very annoying. Nothing to get me raging, but still, fast lane is for faster drivers; if you are not willing to drive fast, stay on the slower lane. That’s what I do. Try Germany. Go to autobahn and drive 50 on the most left lane… See what happens. If you don’t cause an accident, you’ll see pretty coloured lights soon in your rear-view mirror.
More than hate or anything else, I pity Ryan. Such a sad sad life if you have managed to trap yourself in such a life-situation you have to hurry constantly. Such a hurry and stress can’t be good for your heart.
Well, why am I talking about this anyways? I don’t even wear a watch and refuse to panic and hurry. But on the other hand, my life is quite stress-free. And I’m not even buddhist. I guess what I’m trying to say is: Go ahead. Stress your hearts out. I’ll be chilling in the mean time.
Fuck, know sarcasm much? I’m sure that he didn’t literally mean that driving slow is the worst thing a human being can do.
Argh… Can’t edit posts… Have to write a new one.
Btw.. he writes: “but to drag others down–either via obliviousness or malice–is about the most evil act one can engage in.”
Yeah, V, when he said “dragging others down is about the most evil act…” he ment exactly that “dragging others down” mean only driving slow on the fast lange. I’m sure that’s exactly what he ment, since pedophilia, Murder, Rape, Child abuse, Killing Jews and Tyra Banks are very uplifting acts and don’t drag anyone down.
Or maybe my english is just not good enough… Forgive me, I’m not native english speaker.
I think both V and RH are off in left field on this one.
I can see how RH can be all riled up and angry with the mediocrity in the fast lane. Nothing gets me fired up more than Granny running 45 mph in the fast lane.
I can also see why V would call him out for being a self absorbed little Gen-Me crybaby. Worse than rape, murder, etc? Well, no. We all know that. It was an exaggeration, folks. But a great example of how that generation feels.
The middle ground here (on which I stand) is that yes, it is inconsiderate for other people to impede your progress with their mediocrity, and them impeding YOU can be seen as a self absorbed act on their part.
But, at some point or another, in some aspect of your life, you are the granny running 45 mph in the fast lane.
To be fair, even though I’m not getting my panties in a twist over it, I don’t like slow drivers either. I blame growing up near the city. He’s in LA and I’m sure the drivers there are no better than New Yorkers when it comes to impatience and just total lack of politeness in a car. Everyone passing you is a fucking maniac, everyone keeping you from passing is a fucking asshole. That’s just how it goes.
Nothing is more evil than Tyra Banks.
Nothing.
“but to drag others down–either via obliviousness or malice–is about the most evil act one can engage in.”
What a cop out. If he was really as good as he thinks he is, he should be able to rise above it, not get dragged down by it. It’s really just a sign of his own mediocrity. Now let’s wait until he grows up and realizes it.
Just my 2 cents…
Say you’re on the freeway; who would you say has the greater sense of entitlement and self-absorbtion, the person who uses the passing lane to safely pass when they would like to go faster than another person for whatever reason (assuming that this person also allows others to pass when the situation is reversed, which isn’t a given, but is in fact something I strive for), or the person who cruises in the _passing lane_ (look it up, folks, at least in oregon it’s not just an unofficial “fast lane”, it is officially a passing lane only, not a regular driving lane… ) slower than other traffic because they feel like other people can just damn well drive around them/ they’ve earned it/ whatever…
FWIW I don’t believe in or like reckless driving, I believe in driving courteously, which goes both ways. The above may not apply to this guy under discussion, who may drive like a jerk in general. I see many people who get all fired up trying to get ahead when both lanes of a city road are full and I feel this is useless. But when one lane is mostly empty, the other has large gaps, and there’s one guy who just refuses to let anybody past in the empty lane (or the above scenario on a freeway), I say that’s the guy who has a selfish “me-first” (or whatever you called it) problem.
I think he may have been being sarcastic but I don’t know…
“evil” is a very subjective term. What may be considered “evil” to one person may not be “evil” to another. And within the scope of driving, barring accidents, impeding the traffic would be the “most evil thing”. Every extra moment a person is forced to be on the road, is another moment where some risk can occur (however small it may be), and also can increase risks (as mentioned before).
The way I read it, was he was comparing the effect, on either the few or the many. Driving slow when there’s no one around is just fine, but driving slow and holding back everyone…not so much.
Sure, there are more “evil” direct things. But what about the indirect “evils” that the person causes? What if that slow driver is impeding on Police Officers, Fire Fighters, or Paramedics/Doctors that could have saved lives? Or even more indirectly, cause people to arrive late, be fired, and create a disgruntled worker situation?
Yes, there are more directly “evil” things, but at the same time, their scopes are limited to few lives, whereas mediocrity impeding on others can cause much more damage. A murder vs. improperly communicating, which is worse? How about a murder of a single “insignificant” person vs. miscommunication that causes a war?
Anyways, the point is an action that effects few people can be considered less “evil” than an action that effects a society.
(Sidenote: This is mainly from a Utilitarianism view)
Isn’t Holiday that clown who is throwing his life away so that he can be Tucker Max’s intern?
Loser.
Sorry, it just sounds like a crazy idea for me :)…
Add karma Subtract karma
I didn’t write the part about karma… it just appeared
Add karma Subtract karma…
who’s the wise guy that came up with that?
And, the porn shit on the death penalty post is kinda stale.
Wait a minute… I’m taking away my +1 from Olb’s last statement. Sounds like he/she knows a thing or two about being “evil.”
Nevermind. I don’t know what I’m talking about again. I sincerely hope I’m misunderstanding ya’ll, cuz you freak me out. This whole violentacres thing kinda freaks me out. I don’t really like http://www.violentacres.com or http://www. violentacrestalk.com. I’m not judging any of you as “evil,” just really really mean and very cold. Are any of you ever happy? It sure as hell doesn’t seem like it. What have you done to yourselves that make you so jaded? I know what makes me jaded and I think it has a lot to do with ya’ll. So I’m really gonna try here never to look at this site or http://www.violentacres again, but I tend to relapse. You’re no good for me. None. Actually you all made me sick. That’s not to say I wasn’t slightly disturbed before I met any of you. But, after I met You know who and you know who else and anyone connected with them I had absolutely no chance of recovery.
“but to drag others down–either via obliviousness or malice–is about the most evil act one can engage in.”
I don’t know if that’s the truth, but who is doing what to who. And, more importantly why? I know because you’re bored. Sad but true. I apologize for the forthrightness, but I’ve never seen a group of people that lent itself to attacking one person (even if it is one at a time) than the Violent Acres crew. And we all know you’re a crew. I’ve done my soul searching… If you’re still reading this you’re a fool and have a nice day. I hope I’m not impeding your escapades in the fast lane too much. Once again over and out… hopefully for good this time.
“3. Dealing with mental disabilities that convince you that everyone is out to get you is worse.”
Thank you. You’ve all helped me with that aspect of myself. Just because I think people are “out to get me” doesn’t make me evil. And you’re not evil either… like I said… just mean.
So there! Meanies.
Ben is the only one here that got it right…it’s not the FAST lane, it’s the fucking PASSING lane. And if the person on their cell phone in the passing lane isn’t PASSING the “drive exactly the speed limit” fucker in the middle lane (who also isn’t passing anyone), they both deserve my ire.
Some of you may find it amusing to hear that I actually know someone who got a ticket for impeding traffic by setting their cruise at the speed limit in the passing lane and forcing others to pass them on the right. ;-)
While I agree that this kid is an idiot and the severity with which he refers to the driving situation is ridiculous, the meticulous bitch in me must point out that he said it was “ABOUT the most evil act one can engage in”. He could have used better phrasing, but the word “about” definitely doesn’t give the statement finality - if anything, it leaves wiggle-room for squeezing in more socially unacceptable crimes.
Reading all of these posts has merely led me back to my original thoughts on V’s rant about a rant.
A) We Americans are way too easily pissed off when we don’t get our immediate personal gratification.
B) There are no passing lanes or slow lanes or fast lanes near any city with more than 1 million residents.
C) Age has a lot to do with it: the older one gets, in my experience at any rate, the more one is able and *willing* to go with the flow instead of getting all bent out of shape over the stupidity and agressive selfishness of others. And I think, too, that age lends a peculiar hindsight perspective to one’s own past stupidities and agressive selfish actions - to the point where one might just wince.
D) As for evil, it surrounds us every day, unseen and invidious. Nasty co-workers who spread untrue gossip, restaraunt workers who spit in our food, stores who overcharge us, slaves in Africa and Asia and Eastern Europe, killing in the name of some faggot weak-assed god who can’t throw a fucking thunderbolt, and prejudice and bigotry and churches teaching hatred in the name of love.
But life is still pretty good.
So V. reads some random guy’s blog, then decides to take his rant literally? It’s a RANT. Not a thesis on the human condition. Stop trying to act all high and mighty, V.
Has anyone read his response? He’s accusing her of reading comprehension issues and no one has pointed out his. How the hell does he comprehend the books he supposedly reads every week if he can’t even understand the content of one of V’s posts (he links it under “should be polite”)?
Ridiculous. If this guy is a moronic little piece of nothing in a big big world then you might be worse. Your reading comprehension is terrible. The fact that you spewed sooo much hate for such a little post by some douchebag is telling. For people who can see the pitfalls in everyone’s path but their own I recommend: suicide.
I followed the link V had to this guys site, and read a little. I think hes just boring. I checked out his links, and daddydonthitme.com looked like it might be interesting. I checked it out. It’s really good.
The J Parker stories will rip your heart out, and BC Woods will make you cry and laugh at the same time.

I think that what is far more evil/arrogant/whatever, is to drive too fast/close/whatever so that you are at risk of having an accident. Because if you do, you’ll end up slowing down all the traffic for an hour or so until your car gets towed out of the way. Driving a little slow in the fast lane adds a few seconds to a few people’s trips while they pass you, but an accident, (even when it isn’t rush hour,) can easily add a minute or two to thousands of people’s trip…
oh, sigh. This again. I love your blog, but really, you don’t play fair. Your formula seems to be finding another blog somewhere to pick on, then, when they write their angry defense, your retort is always “my blog gets more site so I’m better than you, so I win! And the traffic you got from my attack is more than your blog has ever gotten, so you should be GRATEFUL that I was so mean to you!”
really? seriously? are you that egotistical?
I mean yes, sure, it’s true. Your blog gets more traffic than his, because your blog gets more traffic than 99% of blogs out there on the net. And yes, it’s true, as such you sent him more traffic than he’s probably ever gotten, ever. Because, as a very popular and successful blog, all you have to do is mention somebody, anybody, and right there they will get more traffic than they’ve ever gotten.
But come on, these points have nothing to do with whether or not your original attack was justified.
I’m curious to see if there are going to be any repercussions from all of this.
I’m convinced that V is infact Hollie Toner; something I wish I hadn’t seen. However, if V is not Hollie Toner than Ryan could be responsible for anything that may happen as a result of all of this.
He screens his comments. However, he chose to publish comments like (I’m paraphrasing) “we should find out where she works, and let her boss know what she’s been doing on the Internet.” Not to mention the comments that he published that discuss going to her house.
Some very borderline stuff…
If V is Hollie Toner he’s published her address, among other things. Would he be held responsible if anything happened to her? He should be…
Coolfrequency: Yes, Ryan’s post was ridiculous. Many of his readers have even said that it was ridiculous.
i:
I’m sure it was ridiculous, but see, I don’t care about Ryan. I come here to read V, not Ryan. He can be as stupid as he wants to be, why do I care? I don’t even know who the hell he is. V, on the other hand, has some credibility with her readership which I hope to see her maintain.
plain and simple i just think this v chick is a dumbass
she doesnt seem to know how to read into the deeper meanings of things
im not saying i like ryan
ive read few of his things
but im just saying i really think v is the one who needs to mature and grow the fuck up
